Danville occupies a rugged stretch of land defined by the steep, shadowed contours of Dans Mountain Wma, which holds the settlement in a firm and ancient grip. It lies 12.1 miles south-southwest of LaVale, MD (from LaVale, MD: bearing 211°T), and is situated 7.9 miles southwest of Cresaptown. The earth here is heavy with shale and coal, drained by the North Branch Potomac River, which carves a restless path through the nearby landscape only a mile away.
