Carnegie Deli, 854 7th Avenue, Midtown Manhattan

The Carnegie Deli was a famous and iconic delicatessen located at 854 7th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It first opened its doors in 1937 and quickly became a culinary institution, renowned for its oversized sandwiches, smoked and cured meats, potato knishes, creamy cheesecake and classic Jewish deli fare.

The deli was named after its original location on Carnegie Street, though it later moved to its more recognizable spot on 7th Avenue. The Carnegie Deli was known for its bustling and lively atmosphere, with its walls adorned with photographs of celebrities who had visited the establishment over the years.

What set the Carnegie Deli apart and made it a must-visit for locals and tourists alike were its famously large sandwiches. The portions were incredibly generous, with the sandwiches stacked high with an abundance of meat and other fillings. The most iconic and popular sandwich from the deli was the "Carnegie Pastrami Sandwich," which consisted of tender, flavorful pastrami piled high between two slices of rye bread. Other favorites included corned beef, turkey, and brisket sandwiches.

In addition to their sandwiches, the Carnegie Deli also offered a wide variety of traditional Jewish deli items such as matzo ball soup, knishes, latkes (potato pancakes), and pickles. The deli was also known for its rich and decadent cheesecake, which became a legendary dessert in its own right.

Over the years, the Carnegie Deli gained fame and recognition not only for its food but also for its appearances in popular culture. It was featured in numerous films, television shows, and books, further cementing its status as a New York City landmark.

Unfortunately, the Carnegie Deli on 7th Avenue closed its doors in 2016, much to the disappointment of its loyal patrons. However, its legacy as an iconic New York deli lives on, and its name still evokes nostalgia and memories of hearty meals shared among friends and family.

While the original Carnegie Deli location is no longer operational, there is a branch at Madison Square Garden and there have been several Delis in operation around the US.
