About Mullan, Idaho

Mullan clings to the steep slopes of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains, a place where the very air seems to carry the scent of pine and damp earth. It lies 47.8 miles east-south-east of Coeur d'Alene, ID (from Coeur d'Alene, ID: bearing 107°T), and is situated 9.5 miles east-south-east of Osburn. The North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River, a ribbon of clear, cold water, tumbles and rushes through the valley, its voice a constant murmur against the granite shoulders of the surrounding peaks. Forests of Douglas fir and western hemlock climb the inclines, their dark green a deep, stoic presence against the vast, often bruised-purple sky of evening. The town itself is a collection of buildings huddled close, as if for warmth against the mountain winds, their facades weathered by decades of snow and sun. This is a place forged in the fires of mining, where the echoes of pickaxes and the rumble of ore carts are still a palpable undercurrent in the town's character. Mullan’s history is deeply entwined with the discovery of silver and lead, and though the boom times have long passed, the legacy of those industrious days remains. The local economy, once driven by the deep veins of the earth, now finds its footing in a more varied landscape, with tourism and the enduring presence of the forest playing increasingly important roles. The Union Pacific Railroad still thunders through, a reminder of the vital arteries that once connected this remote valley to the wider world, its whistle a lonely sound that carries far into the silent, watchful mountains.
