About Union, Tennessee

Union sits in a hollow where the land begins its serious rise toward the Cumberland Plateau. It lies 9.2 miles east-north-east of Roane, TN (from Roane, TN: bearing 60°T), and is situated 5.1 miles east-north-east of Kingston. Rolling hills, cloaked in the deep greens of hardwood forests, press in on all sides, their slopes softened by a persistent mist that often clings to the hollows, especially in the early morning light, giving the landscape a hushed, dreaming quality. The air here carries the clean scent of pine and damp earth, a constant reminder of the wildness that still holds sway just beyond the edges of the small settlement. A few scattered farmsteads dot the landscape, their fields a patchwork of cultivated land against the unbroken green, and the quiet hum of cicadas fills the warm afternoons. The history of Union is tied to the fertile soil and the timber that once dominated this stretch of Roane County. Early settlers, drawn by the promise of agriculture, cleared the land, their efforts etched into the gentle contours of the hills. While farming remains a part of the local fabric, the economy has seen shifts, with many residents now commuting to larger centers for work, though a strong sense of self-reliance and neighborly connection persists. The nearby Clinch River, a ribbon of silver reflecting the sky, offers a quiet respite and a connection to the waterways that have always shaped life in these parts, its banks a place for contemplation and the simple pleasure of watching the water flow.
