About Justice, West Virginia

Justice unfolds in a deep Appalachian hollow, where the land rises abruptly in folded ridges cloaked in dense, hardwood forests. It lies 53.7 miles south-south-west of Charleston, WV (from Charleston, WV: bearing 192°T), and is situated 9.8 miles south of Mallory. The air, especially after a rain, carries the damp, earthy scent of leaf mold and decaying wood, a constant reminder of the persistent growth and decay that shapes this terrain. The Guyandotte River, a vein of murky, determined water, snakes through the valley floor, its banks lined with a scatter of modest homes and the occasional weathered barn. Sunlight filters down in shafts, illuminating patches of fern and moss, and at dusk, the western sky bleeds into bruised purples and oranges behind the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains. The lifeblood of Justice has long been drawn from the earth beneath its feet, with coal mining once defining its very existence and shaping the character of its people. Though the great veins of coal have been largely exhausted, the echoes of that industry remain, visible in the abandoned tipples and the deep-cut valleys that mark the landscape. The local economy now grapples for new footing, with small businesses and a reliance on the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains for tourism and recreation offering tentative avenues for growth. Generations have passed through Justice, each leaving their mark on the quiet persistence of this place, a resilience forged in the crucible of hard work and the enduring embrace of the Appalachian wilderness.
