About Los Cerrillos, New Mexico

Los Cerrillos lies under a sky that stretches, immense and often a startling, pure blue, above a landscape of rugged arroyos and rolling hills. It lies 20.2 miles south-south-west of Santa Fe, NM (from Santa Fe, NM: bearing 211°T), and is situated 8.7 miles south of La Cienega. The earth here is a palette of ochre and rust, dusted with the muted greens of sagebrush and the spiky tenacity of yucca. Sunlight, when it falls, has a particular quality, a dry, clear intensity that sharpens the edges of the horizon and casts long, dancing shadows as the day matures. The air itself carries a subtle scent of dust and dry grass, a breath of the high desert that seems to settle deep within the lungs, lending a quiet stillness to the very act of breathing. This place, Los Cerrillos, holds within its dry soil the echoes of a more boisterous past, a time when prospectors and miners sought their fortunes in the surrounding hills. Though the boom times of turquoise and silver have long since receded, a ghost of that industry lingers in the weathered adobe buildings and the names of forgotten claims. Today, the economy of Los Cerrillos is a slower, more artisanal affair, drawing visitors to its galleries and studios where local artists interpret the unique light and spirit of the region. The pace of life is unhurried, marked by the slow crawl of pickup trucks and the friendly nods exchanged between residents, a quiet continuity against the vast, indifferent beauty of the New Mexico landscape.
